Kiteboading
Kiteboarding history is of course tied in with the history of kites in general. More specifically, it is tied in with the use of kits for propulsion. The people credited with first exploring this were those of 13th century China.
It was during the 1800s that a man named George Pocock used larger kites to move carts on land. In greater relation to kiteboarding, he also used them to propel ships on the water. In fact, these examples of his made use of a four-line control system. This is the same used to kitesurf today.
As greater kite designs developed, so did the possibility of kiteboarding. It was during the 1970s and 1980s that people began experimenting with the mixture of kiteflying and sports. For example, they tried to use them with canoes, ice skates, and water skis. From water ski combinations came combinations with surfboards. This led to the first inflatable kite design being patented in 1979 for kitesurfing.
