Kite FAQs
What is the Starboard Rule?
This is a kitesurfing safety rule, as well as Sailing Rule 12. It applies when two vessels (or "kiters," in this circumstance) approach from opposite directions. The kiter with the wind to the right side, or starboard, has the right of way.
Is it true that kitesurfing is the fastest way of sailing on water?
Yes, this is true. During the 2008 Luderitz Speed Challenge in Namibia, the top three runs were done through kitesurfing. These were all validated by the World Sailing Speed Record Council.
What does "overpowered" mean in terms of kitesurfing?
To be overpowered is to receive too much power from the kite. There are several factors which may cause this. Too large of a kite and an increase in wind are two situational issues which may cause this. A kiter may also simply be going too fast or have made an incorrect adjustment as well. Some experienced riders may opt to switch to a smaller board to compensate for the situation.
